Basecamp Epoxy Paint Application Guide

Substrate Preparation:

Seams should be reinforced on the back side of the panels to prevent deflection.

To ensure adequate adhesion, the surface must be clean, dry, and free from sanding dust, wax, and oily contaminants.

  1. Fill imperfections, screw heads, and seams with System Three QuikFair epoxy fairing compound.
  2. After 4-6 hours, sand the QuikFair with a random orbital sander and 150 grit sandpaper.
  3. Clean the surface of sanding dust with a shop vacuum or compressed air.

Measure and Mixing:

  1. Stir/shake the Basecamp Epoxy Paint Base (Part B) thoroughly to remix any settled material.
  2. Then mix 3 parts Base (Part B) with 1 part Resin (Part A) by volume and stir thoroughly. Best mixing is achieved with an electric drill and a Jiffy Mixer attachment.  Mix only enough material which can be used well within 2 hours @ 70°F.
  3. Add the aggregate slowly while mixing. Mix for 1 minute or until uniformly dispersed.

Note: Higher temperatures will reduce pot life, while cooler temperatures will increase pot life.

Application:

What you will need to apply Basecamp Epoxy Paint:

  • ½” nap roller cover (Professional shed resistant)
  • 5-gallon metal screen grid
  • 5-gallon bucket (for jobs requiring at least 1 gallon of paint)
  • 2 Paint trays(for jobs requiring less than 1 gallon of paint
Note:  The metal screen grid is essential for a quality application of the Basecamp Epoxy Paint.  It conditions the roller by distributing the paint and aggregate evenly throughout the roller.

The metal screen grid can be hung inside a 5-gallon pail or set inside a paint tray.  For smaller jobs, use two paints trays, one to hold the paint and the other tray to hold the metal screen grid.

Pour Basecamp Epoxy Paint into either a 5-gallon pail or paint tray.

Before beginning, the ½” nap roller must be fully charged with paint.  This process can take a couple of minutes.  To charge the roller, saturate it with paint.  With light down pressure, roll it back and forth a couple of times over the metal screen grid.  Repeat this process two times.

Now that the roller is conditioned, it will hold the correct amount of paint, allowing for uniform coverage and distribution of the aggregate.

  1. Starting at the highest point, roll out a 1’ x 2’ area, working in an up and down motion. Now, uniformly wet the roller with paint.  Follow by conditioning it over the metal screen grid.  Repeat this process until a 4’ x 4’ area has been coated.
  1. Roll over the entire 4’x4’ area without wetting the roller with paint. This blends the quadrants and uniformly distributes the aggregate.  If you like the aggregate density and uniformity, repeat steps 1 and 2 until the entire wall is painted.
  1. If you want greater aggregate density, wet the roller with paint, condition it on the metal screen grate, and coat a 2’ x 4’ area. Repeat this process over the next 2’ x 4’ area.  Then without wetting the roller with paint, roll out the 4’ x 4’ area until the paint is uniformly distributed.  Repeat until the entire wall is painted.
  1. Blend the 4’x4’ areas together as you progress.

Note:  Basecamp Epoxy Paint can be recoated in 6-8 hours if necessary.

Cleanup:

Clean brushes and rollers promptly after the application with warm, soapy water.  Rollers and brushes may be further cleaned with denatured alcohol.
